Is coconut flour or quinoa flour a direct substitute for wheat flour?

No.  McKenzie’s Quinoa Flour is ground and milled Quinoa grain while Coconut Flour is made from dried pure coconut meat. Both perform differently to grain based flour in cooking and baking and are therefore not a direct substitute for wheat flour. Coconut & Quinoa flour are not a direct substitute for wheat flour.  A lower quantity is required versus wheat flour dur to its higher absorbency. Some tips to keep in mind as a general rule of thumb include:

  • Quantities of other ingredients will need to be altered. In particular, recipes will require more moisture in the form of extra eggs and other liquids such as milk or water.
  • Cooking time and temperature will need to be adjusted (generally lower cooking temperature & longer cooking time).
